A classic car’s history can, at times, be tenuous if that particular car has been off the road or shuttered away in someone’s barn for an extended period of time. Records are lost, original papers become damaged or disintegrate completely, and those who built or owned the cars pass away. This makes tracing a car’s provenance extremely difficult, as is the case with this 1972 BMW E9 3.5 CSI.

The BMW E9 3.5 CSI you see before you was discovered rotting away in someone’s garage not too long ago. As far as tracing the vehicle’s history, the only thing the owner had to go on was that the VIN number that relates this model is from 1972, and it features a widebody kit that was developed for Group 4 racing. There’s also a single picture that was found of it back in the day, although, even that is hard to verify its authenticity.

The picture shows a widebody BMW E9 with what appears to be an Alpina livery. Other than that, not much is known about the car. That didn’t stop the current owner from reviving the classic possible racecar, and upgrading it to the E9 3.5 CSL state you see now. Originally, the car came with a 3.0-liter straight-six engine. The current owner has replaced the engine in favor of the larger 3.5-liter unit that came in the later E9 3.5 CSL.

In addition to the larger motor, the current owners also upgraded the carburetors to Three Weber units, a five-speed dog-leg manual gearbox, a custom exhaust, new trunk fuel fillers, and a new interior, all of which culminate in a beautiful racing homage to the original racecars from the 1970s, and now is your chance to buy it.

According to Racecarsdirect.com, this 1972 BMW E9 3.5 CSI is looking for a new home after its long restoration process that was completed in 2014. For $116,007, which is around the price of a well spec’d BMW M5, you could be the proud owner of this gorgeous piece of BMW history.
