Rumors, speculation, more rumors, and now finally, a confirmation from the automaker. No, we’re not talking about the often rumored, possibly happening mid-engine Corvette, but rather the more humble, Jeep Wrangler pickup truck.

Each year for the Easter Jeep Safari, Jeep brings out a handful of wonderful custom Jeeps that everyone goes gaga for. And each year, we get a new iteration of what a Jeep Wrangler pickup truck could look like from that event. The problem is, Jeep never actually puts the truck into production and enthusiasts are left waiting another year to see the next Jeep Wrangler pickup truck that Jeep won’t build.

Finally though, at this year’s North American International Auto Show, the company put rumors and speculation to rest and stated that it will indeed be building a Jeep Wrangler pickup truck, just not soon. According to Jeep’s CEO Mike Manley and Fiat Chrysler’s CEO Sergio Marchionne, the upcoming 2018 Wrangler will be when we finally see a pickup Wrangler.

The new Jeep Wrangler is currently being designed and tested, and a prototype or concept of the new Wrangler will likely be seen either by the end of this year, or the beginning of next year. Besides being a completely new design, Marchionne and Manley stated that the Wrangler pickup has been confirmed and will likely be shown to the public after the initial debut of the new Wrangler.

Besides the confirmation, Jeep’s executives didn’t relay any other information on the upcoming off-road pickup truck. Chrysler will possibly let more information on the Wrangler pickup truck slip in the company’s 2016 Earnings call later this month, but until then, all we have is speculation on what the Jeep Wrangler pickup truck, and indeed the new Wrangler, could look like.
At least we finally know it’s happening.
