When you pass someone driving a breathtaking supercar on the road, you may sometimes think, “What a lucky SOB, I wonder what choices/careers he pursued that ended up with him behind the wheel of a McLaren?” The notion that the driver might have rented the car with a stolen credit card may not have crossed your mind.
Two teens from Sonoma, CA used a stolen credit card to rent a $240,000 McLaren MP4-12C. Mohannad Halaweh and Nhimia Kahsay, both 19, were pulled over and arrested this past Wednesday behind the wheel of the impressively un-subtle McLaren. According to Sonoma County Sheriff’s department, the duo were taken into custody without incident.
The car was rented for an impressive $13,000, at which point it was reported stolen, when the rental facility realized the card was hot– but that was not the only purchase on the stolen card spending spree. The duo also used the stolen card to spend $27,000 renting a $12 million mansion in the community of Glen Ellen.
Halaweh had his bail set at $100,000, and is being held under credit card fraud and suspicion of possessing stolen property. Meanwhile Kahsay had outstanding fraud warrants, and is expected to face additional charges. His bail is set at $60,000.
The MP4-12C is an incredible machine. It features a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 making 592 horsepower, allowing it to get from zero to sixty in a scant 3.1 seconds. So just remember– we all want to drive supercars REALLY badly, but just make sure you go about it through lawful means.
