If you’re looking for a nice wholesome movie to watch with family, Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof is probably not that film. The Grindhouse flick follows a group of friends that are pursued by a psychopathic car enthusiast, Stuntman Mike (played by Kurt Russell), and his “death proof” stunt cars. It’s graphic, it’s raw, and it pulls no punches.
Without giving too much away, Dodge’s sonorous Challenger earned screen time in Death Proof with actress Sydney Tamiia Poitier at the wheel, as she, Rosario Dawson, and Zoë Bell fight desperately to evade Russell in his sinister black ’69 Dodge Charger. The cars trade paint repeatedly and Russell’s character tries to knock Bell off the hood of the fleeing Challenger, only to have the tables ultimately turned on him. Surprise—Stuntman Mike isn’t so “death proof” after all.
Under the hood lies a big 383ci V8 mated to a TorqueFlite 727 automatic transmission, but interestingly the owner suggests this car was originally a Triple Gold big block car. What isn’t so clear however is which car it is from the film.
Most Hollywood productions feature multiple vehicles with the same likeness—one for interior shots, one for exterior glamour shots, and perhaps a few to crash up. Given the brutal blows that the Dodge Challenger and Charger exchanged on screen… one might expect a few stunt cars to exist too.
Like it? The Dodge Challenger asks $32,500.
